I originally read it for an assignment, but I fell in love with the writing style and tales that Dawn went on as a child, alongside learning about the differences in lifestyle she lived compared to others.

I really can’t tell if this is supposed to be autofiction or a memoirish essay collection, but either way I don’t think this was as successful as it could have been. While each individual segment was entertaining and had its own loose theme, there really wasn’t any kind of character arc like you would expect from fiction or personal growth as one would expect from nonfiction because this focused almost exclusively on Dawn’s (the character/ author’s) childhood with very little insight into her late teenage years and transition into adulthood, with the exception of the last chapter/essay. I feel like with a little more direction and editing this could have been great, but as it is, it’s just fine.
I loved this funny, Saskatchewan memoir! Dumont's stories about her childhood and growing up are pretty relatable to, and a neat insight into reservation life.
We were very much alive and well though others had made a concerted effort to kill us off. Later, I learned that throughout the world, people thought that Indians had been killed off by war, famine and disease. Chris Rock does a comedy bit about this point, claiming that you will never see an Indian family in a Red Lobster. This is a misconception : my family has gone to Red Lobster many times. (However, we are most comfortable at a Chinese buffet.)
In Saskatchewan, most non-Native people were very much aware that nearly a million Native people still existed, mainly to annoy them and steal their tax dollars. (The Way of the Sword, p. 220)

Un livre plein d’auto-dérision et avec beaucoup de coeur.
Un livre plein d’auto-dérision et avec beaucoup de coeur.
Read 90% of it. Couldn’t get myself to finish it. Such a shame because I loved it so much in the beginning. This book should have been way shorter with less description that seemed to have no to a little purpose.
I took this book out from my library's newly launched Indigineous Collection and couldn't put it down from the moment I arrived home until I went to bed at 2 o'clock in the morning. Dumont describes living in reserves with humor, honesty, and affection. Her light hearted tone is well equipped to not only make these stories relatable to a readership with limited experience of her subject matter, but also to deal with some pretty difficult situations not yet fully understood by her young narrator. On top of this, similar to other reviewers, I found myself laughing outloud at several parts. I'd describe them, but I think any interested readers should pick this up and experience these moments first hand.
