I decided to try Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant as it was available for free through my Audible membership, and I’ve been intrigued by Into the Drowning Deep for a while. I figured this novella would be a good way to test the waters (no pun intended) and see if I liked what the series had to offer.
Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work for me. For a novella, I felt it took too long to really get going. With shorter works, I prefer the pace to pick up more quickly, and this one left me waiting for that excitement a bit too long. While I’m glad I gave it a shot—especially since it was free—it didn’t draw me in enough to fully capture my interest.
If you’re curious about Into the Drowning Deep, this novella might still be worth a try, but I personally won’t be continuing further into the series.

proves my theory that into the drowning deep would be a better book if it were a novella without any of that land nonsense. also am now even more confused abt the dolphin sitch in that one ngl.
I read this prequel after reading Into the Drowning Deep. I think I preferred it, if only because it was so similar in structure but it wasn't sooo long so some of the pacing issues were not there. It was otherwise really similar. I still felt like there was small pacing issues and not a focus on a singular character making it hard to connect with the story. I also feel like if I'd read this in publication order aka this one first, I'd be disappointed to get to the big reveal in ItDD because the endings were essentially the same?? I also hated the way the audiobook narrator read the ASL passages, making it sound so disjointed and like someone was spelling out every letter in sign, instead of a fluid language in translation.
