Paulo is one of my favorite authors. So far nothing I’ve read of his has topped The Alchemist. But I love this story and how it’s written from various viewpoints. Very unlike any of his novels I’ve read.
A good read but a little too grey. It didnt live up to my expectations and more than once I think i missed the point.
Such a great book. The message behind it is great and it’s written in an interesting way which keeps you wanting to read more! Definitely one of my top 5.
I really enjoyed reading The Witch of Portobello, but it wasn’t a “great” book. I love the concept of exploring the divine feminine through dance, this is something I’ve recently become very interested in. The execution seemed a bit rushed through, and I think that’s my biggest issue here. There are some weird parts of the story where much detail is given only for it to go nowhere. 3.5/5
It’s hard to finish. Kinda uncomfortable with the format, too many characters, hard to keep track
A captivating book about the power and strength that lies dormant in all of us.
I hesitate recommending this book to people, even though I loved it. There is a clear religious philosophy in the book that differs from mine, but still, I found the ideas and concepts of the book facinating. The main character - the witch of Portobello Road - dances. After I read this book - I wanted to dance so much.

I was surprised by this. It’s gritty and earthy (and sexy), and a surprisingly insightful look at the spinning fluidity of feminine tropes.
Athena’s self-confidence in her role as woman, mother, lover, and leader is absolute, and the most wonderful thing about it is that her story is told entirely through the testimony of others. By seeing Athena through their eyes, we develop our own opinions about her strengths and weaknesses, and see her as a complex—but whole—person. Power and the feminine divine is the dominant theme, giving us some important philosophical food for thought throughout.

The book was the best! it shows someone's life through other people's eyes, and how she changed their life either in a good or bad way! It also changed my perspective on a lot of things, like love and friendship and gypsies.
I got 150 pages in and I gave up. Alas, I just got bored. Coelho does not excite me at all.
Unfortunately, this text had potential and I liked the idea of learning about someone's life through other people's stories about her. One of the main issues though - aside from Coelho's usual heavy-handed attempts at Very Deep Thoughts Indeed - was the constant feeling that all of these stories on Athena were very male-voiced, even when those stories were being told by women. I couldn't shake off the conviction that (1) all of the stories had a male-centric bias and (2) Athena's own voice and story was consequently silenced.
