Oliver Twist

This book has such pointless footnotes that really intrude in the reading.
They are either...
a) Irrelevant explaining something that isn't especially peculiar to Dickens that could be looked up in any dictionary if required.
b) Dubious, such as explaining an adenoidal character saying "Dow" means Down, when I suspect it should actually be "Now!"
c) Unnecessary when Dickens explains the criminal argot in the next paragraph anyway.
or
d) Missing. The criteria by which words were deemed worthy of a footnote was unfathomable as some terms which deserved explanation got nothing.

I have to admit, I didn't actually finish reading this (which is why I did not give it a rating). It was just so frustrating and the things that happened in it, particularly to children, were so awful that I couldn't enjoy it. I think that was Dickens's point because I know he wrote it, at least in part, to shed light on how the poor and orphans were treated at the time. I know what he wrote was important, but I decided to stop reading it. Honestly, I googled the second half of the story. I've only done that a handful of times, but sometimes I think it is healthier for me mentally. It's not that I don't know that awful things happen to kids sometimes, it's just that it upsets me way too much and I can't get the images out of my head. Anyway, it was compelling and well-written, but not something I can handle, at least not while I'm pregnant. I gave myself permission to stop.

um it was alright. sometimes good and kind of a page-turner, sometimes a bit boring. especially the first half was kind of just ”x happens and oliver comes to a new place”. i was also extremely bothered by the antisemitism in this book.

Very well-written. There are a lot of characters, but if you keep reading, they'll straighten out. The book is extrememly sad and depressing if looked at just as a story. If you look for what Dicken's was trying to say, you will see how funny and sarcastic it is! I won't be reading it again soon, but I bet I will in the future!
