I can honestly say I would not have chosen to read this on my own, but it was the February pick for my library's Rory Gilmore Book Club, so I decided to give it a try. I went into this book with the firm belief that I had already read it in high school but, as I got further into it, I couldn't help but wonder.... did I?? Or did I skim it and rely on CliffsNotes to cobble together a paper? None of this story was familiar to me (and I thought I knew it well from having seen Oliver and Company many times!), and I was incredibly surprised to find myself enjoying it.
I have an impossible time following Jane Austen's writing style, and I assumed I would have the same issue with Dickens. Although I have read (and adored) "A Christmas Carol" multiple times, I always assumed my love for that particular story was an anomaly and that the rest of Dickens' books would not be to my liking. I actually found this book to be quite readable, and I had no trouble following his meandering sentences. Now that I know what to expect from his writing, perhaps I will check out more Dickens books in the future.

I really like the characters in this book and the ending but I found that the book was too slow at times and, perhaps, I would have enjoyed this book better as an audiobook.
Graphic: Child abuse, Antisemitism
Moderate: Violence, Murder
Minor: Death of parent

It was a speedy misjudged audiobook listen - I wasn't captivated but I'm one to finish what I start, in most cases! Very important subject matter, but I wasn't the biggest fan.
