Eartheater is an interesting novel. It chronicles two young people, abandoned by their father and grieving in the wake of their mother's death. Left to fend for themselves, the protagonist begins something akin to fortune-telling for neighbors. She does this by eating spoonfuls of dirt. Upon consuming the dirt, she can divine the whereabouts of missing people, and can sense if someone is alive or dead.
This kind of magical ability seems to speak directly to the social issues in modern Argentina, which include high rates of missing persons, particularly women. To be able to determine their fate based on the consumption of earth is a beautiful and powerful image.
This novel follows several smaller stories wherein the protagonist helps others, while working through her first romantic and sexual relationship, as well as fitting in time to grieve. This novel emphasizes that survival often supersedes the privilege of sorrow, and that these young people must carry on no matter what, even if that means the protagonist must physically harm herself by eating dirt in order to help others.
