This book is lovely and yet also is a fever dream! Time didn’t seem to matter and I had doubts about some of the characters actually being real. But wow. Loved it.

Eartheater takes place in a barrio in Argentina and follows an unnamed narrator living in poverty. She eats the dirt of people who have been or are about to be killed by violence, and in doing so has visions.
This checked so many of my boxes. Being that it was written by a woman of color in her native language and that it was described as a creepy version of magical realism. However, I wanted to like this so much more than I did. I think this would have been better executed as a short story as it sometimes fell a little flat. The plot kind of gets lost a little at times and the middle of the novel was very slow. I also found it very difficult to resonate with/empathize with the narrator and I wonder if that had something to do with the translation.
Overall, an interesting story about loss, grief, and the fates of women in the hands of patriarchy.
