LOVED this gorgeously written, magical, engaging, creative, and intriguing story!!! Diane Setterfield has an amazing gift for storytelling. Did I mention the story was magical and engaging? YUP...100% Highly recommend!!! Some of my favorite quotes:

"For another hour they talked. Every detail of the day's events was gone over, the facts were weighed and combined, quantities of surmising, eavesdropping, and supposition were stirred in for flavor, and a good sprinkling of rumor was added like yeast to make it rise."

"Ah tributaries!...these are the streams and rivulets that come from elsewhere to add their own volume and momentum to that of the Thames. And the tributaries are about to join this story...we might trace the tributaries back, to see not their beginnings--mysterious and unknowable things--but, more simply, what they were doing yesterday."

"They sat on the bank. It was better to tell such stories close to the river than in a drawing room. Words accumulate indoors, trapped by walls and ceilings. The weight of what has been said can lie heavily on what might yet be ssaid and suffocate it. By the river the air carries the story on a journey: one sentence drifts away and makes room for the next."

a winding tale, just like a river

a slow burn, but I was in the mood for the slow build, as the story weaved, twisted, ebbed and flowed

plus her writing was beautiful and I was captivated by all the stories and characters

a little bit mystery, a little bit historical fiction, a little bit magical realism ~ a good book to begin a new year with

This book was very difficult for me. It was very slow. I couldn’t really connect to the story or the characters. I often found myself going backwards to understand what was fully happening. I did enjoy some of the descriptive language surrounding the river. Perhaps this genre is not my cup of tea. Thank you NetGalley and Atria books for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Naprawdę lubię powolne książki, ale ta mnie tak zmęczyła, że wyczekiwałam końca. Niestety - nie dla mnie. Myślę, że całą przyjemność z czytania tej książki odebrały mi oczekiwania wobec niej

Really enjoyed the audiobook of this. Not sure why one character had to be black, but other than that - a lovely tale of a lost girl and the lives she touches along the riverbank.
