This book was my introduction to darker dysopian horror books and I LOVED IT. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea with the body horror, gore, and sadism; but if you love a dark, gut-wrenching horror this is the book for you. Relatively short read that I finished in a day but one I keep coming back to.

i really enjoyed reading this, but the last ten or so chapters moved very fast and were pretty predictable.

Perhaps the most horrific thing about this novel is that, at times, you can forget that the “head” that’s being referred to is human - or just as human as you or I. Don’t get me wrong, this was undoubtedly a disturbing read... but where I was hoping to find something really psychologically terrifying, I found borderline monotony. Yes, the main character, Marcos, seems to still have enough humanity to realize that the reality he’s living in is horrifying, but where we land in this terrible new world is at a point when it has already become normalized. Marcos is a rare exception to the rule.
The story I want is how they got there. How did they go about deciding which humans were human and which were food? Before those selected as food were bred as animals, stripped of their humanity, language, & understanding of their situation, how did it feel to find yourself in a cage, waiting for your turn in the assembly line, fully understanding what is about to happen to you? That is terrifying! That’s what I was expecting. Give me the prequel!
Slight disappointment in the horror aside, I struggled to put this book down. It’s gripping from page one through to the end. I definitely recommend the read.

I honestly am not sure what else to say other than... what the F did I just read?!...

This book was DARK. It was CHALLENGING. It was SAD. It was VIVID. It was GROTESQUE. I think it was also important. It will make you think about the world slightly differently after reading it.

It is a wild ride... but fair warning... it might be a short book, but it can be difficult to read at times. This is definitely not for the faint of heart. This book needs a warning label on it....

I was absolutely nauseated by this book, but found it to be a profound read in the examination of how we treat one another as well as other creatures on earth.
