Well, this was a fun page Turner! Learned about this one from a teacher Facebook group. Some folks said that middle schoolers and highschoolers can’t put it down. Well this 57 year-old couldn’t put it down either.
Really twisty and interesting concept. A family is living in an underground compound for six years because the world as they know it is gone, they believe.
There were some teeth gritting and grimacing plot twist And the main character did a big pivot in attitude and personality a bit too quickly. But overlooking those things, I really did enjoy this book . I’m looking forward to reading the second book to see how things follow up.

Alright plot, but story execution seems to be more focused on a younger (ie. Middle school audience) pacing was a bit fast and character growth was predictable, and the twist ending wasn’t as shocking as I think it was meant to be. Overall, I think this would be an engaging story for someone who was just getting started with dystopian and YA books, but after reading hundreds of those types, the vocabulary seemed elementary.
Giving this one 2.5 stars. The book took forever to get into and does not pick up any speed until around page 150 (book is only 245 pages). Lackluster characters and just far fetched. Save your time and skip this one.
I just devoured this book in less than 14 hours. It didn't slow down for a second. Bodeen knows exactly how to keep the information coming. Writers, if you are looking for an example on how to avoid info dumping, READ THIS BOOK! The trail never runs cold. (Can you tell I am editing my manuscript yet? ;) )

A lot of thought and detail went into the compound, and it kept me distracted from the plot.
