I've been a huge fan of Dali since probably around 1995 when I saw a T-shirt with the Hallucinogenic Toreador on it. I've seen his stuff all over the world (Spain, Brazil, the UK) and I live in St. Petersburg Florida where we are graced with an entire permanent (and recently moved) museum. I read [b:The Secret Life of Salvador Dali|91724|The Secret Life of Salvador Dali|Salvador Dalí|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1171234443s/91724.jpg|636832] and liked that a lot but this book wasn't as good. It's written in a kind of diary format and is only about 60% intelligible to the average college educated reader.

He talks about drooling while he sleeps and leaving it to cake on the crease of his lip causing a sore so that he can experience that pain/pleasure throughout the day. He talks a lot about his daily toiletries, having dreams about "white turds" that make him some kind of metaphorical equivalent of the goose who laid the golden eggs.

I love just about everything Dali, and being someone who is repeatedly referred to as "someone who doesn't think like other people" I feel a kinship with him. But he talks a lot about himself being a genius and him and Gala being gods among men and it was a bit off putting after a while. He's brilliant and talented and legendary and obviously unique but it just made him seem like an asshole and not someone you would want to be around.

So I would say this book is only for hardcore Dali fans. It fills the years of his life after the Secret Life and gives you more insight into his (ab)normal daily life even though at times it skips entire years.

One of the strangest books I ever read...and I tried to understand its importance. There is nothing to learn from it.
