The world building of Panga is luck-luster. The world of Panga has superficial religiosity, laptops, and food trucks; elements that feel unoriginal and anachronistic. The main character, Dex, goes on a journey of self-discovery in their van-life reminiscent living arrangements, but doesn't really have any character flaws or struggles. Furthermore, even though the main character is a monk they curse fairly frequently, breaking immersion. The idea of a post AI human society isn't really explored beyond a surface level either. While not a long book, not much was done, or done well, in the 147 pages it has. Other than exploring what a world accepting of agender/non-binary people would look like, this book doesn't establish anything new or thought-provoking. If you're looking for something that isn't challenging or deep with a YA atmosphere, this book could be for you.

There are brief tense and subjectively sad parts but they’re brief and the sad ones read more introspective

A simple story about purpose beyond capitalism and harmony with your environment. I heard lots of good things about this book, but was disappointed by the writing style. Chambers tells you explicitly what characters are thinking and feeling, and tells you how you should feel about the details of this story. The main character(s) have little internal complexity. Due to this simplicity, I felt like I was reading a book intended for middle-high schoolers, and while there’s nothing wrong with YA, I would expect a book billed towards adults to have a lot more to say.

A lighthearted, quick read. For a short book you really get to ‘lean back’ and simply learn about the universe Chambers creates. A perfect book for those contemplating choices, like sibling Dex themself.
