Philip Marlowe is a great character, the original hard boiled detective. In this story he's hired to find a missing business man's wife. What unfolds is a much stickier plot.

I love the 40s slang, quick wit, and Mr. Chandler's way with words. He's a very clever writer. In a new historical criticism of it: smoking and drinking were just part of life. It's amazing how often someone has a drink (or 6). Everyone smokes, too. cigarette cases are a way to accessorize.

The denouement is quick and the ending is sudden. Mr. Chandler did a good job of keeping me guessing as to what the hell was going on until the end. I really do enjoy his stories.

If you haven't read any Marlowe stories, this is as good as any to start with. Though it's the 3rd book, they don't build off of each other and you'd not be missing out starting here.

Basic but entertaining. Can’t argue with a good classic

I'm about half-finished with Chandler's work and I'm not going to be happy when I run out.
