“And what a cruel and terrible thing it is, to be a divine with such power and magic, and yet find yourself so small-minded and afraid that you decide to live out your endless days harming others. Instead of letting us choose to love you for the good you could be, you have forced us to serve you by way of pain and terror. That is unforgivable, and a lesson you will have learned too late, when you lose this war against us”

"Should I be surprised that I was falling in love with you a second time? Should I be surprised that your words found me here, even in the darkness? That l've been carrying your E. letters close to my heart like they are a shield to protect me?"

"do we live by our past, or do we live by what is to come? Do we choose to waste time looking behind to things that have already happened and cannot be changed, or do we keep our sight forward on what we can see?"

"It reminded me that I cannot hold those I love in a cage, even if it feels like protecting them."

"I don't think we know what we're made of until the worst moment possible happens. Then we must decide who we truly are and what is most important to us. I think we're often surprised by what we become."

I don’t love it as much as the first one. I wish there was more beautiful letter writing, because Ross is a master at them. I liked the whimsy fairytale vibes in the last third of the book.

I don't think I have words to describe this book yet. What a rollercoaster!

I LOVED this. This gave me the feeling of book 1. I devoured this read in one afternoon/evening.

Spoilers!

Following how much I loved Divine Rivals, I have to say I was disappointed in this one.

What I liked:
  • The pining, as always, was peak. I do so love that in a romance novel (or any novel, really)
  • Roman Carver Kitt remains one of the best male main characters I've read this year
  • I LOVED the addition of Tobias, and his chemistry with Attie was instant. They're such a cute couple
  • The reversal of Iris and Roman's positions, where they're writing to each other and she knows who he is but he doesn't know who she is, was quite poignant
  • I'm a sucker for a museum heist, what can I say
  • I liked the ending, and tbh if Iris and Roman didn't get their happily ever after I was going to riot
  • Overall the vibes were still good

What I didn't like:
  • We know absolutely nothing about the gods and their motivations. We have no idea why Dacre is bad (besides bombing civilians, but that comes after he's already begun the war) and no idea why people chose to fight for or against him.
    • His backstory, and Enva's, were NOT well-explained. I know Iris tried to say "I write only for myself" but there was still a clear good god and bad god in this situation and I have to say there was nothing Enva did that made me think she was a good god. The sword thing came out of nowhere
  • The Graveyard was useless; there seemed very little point to their being there besides to provide a moment at the end when Iris would have to save Roman
  • The last book was basically a romance in a WW1 setting with small hints of fantasy, which I loved. This one seemed to lean far more heavily into the fantasy, and it SEPARATED the main leads. At one point, Iris asked Roman to come with her away from Dacre, and he says "I can't." ??? WHY THE HELL NOT.
  • I seriously didn't love that Roman and Iris were apart for so much of this book, as the tension between them was what made the last book shone
  • The personality and grit that Iris had in the last one is kind of lost here
  • Forest died and that SUCKED. At the end of the last book his characterization was great; he had clear trauma and I was pretty certain he was going to end up being a wedge between Iris and Roman, or at least a key resource to defeating Dacre since he was the only one to return from being forced to fight in his forces...but nope. He just...sits around and then dies. I was UPSET about this. Also - if he can break free, why don't the rest of the soldiers?

Overall I still enjoyed this one, but I was confused by the central premise (the war between the gods) and their motivations, and that was excusable in the last book since the romance was so good and the atmosphere was excellent. That was lacking here, I'm afraid.
