Powerful at times, and it intrigued me enough that I wanted to finish it. But the child abuse, the sympathetic way in which Joe is presented, and the ending where everything just came together was off-putting.

This book was not the easiest read and it took me much longer than I expected, but it was very good. I bawled uncontrollably for hours in the last half of the book, despite being very much in public. I was amazed to find myself sympathizing as much with Joe as with Simon and Kerewin, because I did not in any way condone Joe's actions. The ending was satisfactory, although I am still a little confused about what happened to Kerewin while she was away (probably too much mysticism there for me). Definitely came out with a real affection for Simon and an awe at his resilience.

Would recommend this to others -- it definitely deserves the accolades it has won.

beautiful writing but a bit too heavy for me now. to be finished later

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I give up. This book has almost 600 pages, which is at least 300 too many. I hate the writing style and I've read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, and I don't want to read like 450 more pages of a child being beaten within an inch of his life.
