Beautifully written, it focuses on the deeply flawed characters. It's a slow burn: as a reader, you slowly get to learn to know the characters, and you can't help feeling attached to them, before their cracks start to show. Heartbreaking, and lovely. An absolutely fantastic, and very dark, read.

A beautiful and heartbreaking piece, filled with the love and pain of life. Poetic. Fresh and original. Bit confusing...

Amazingly well written. Occasionally difficult to read, because parts are brutal.

At times this book is jaw droppingly brilliant. At others it bored me to tears. I especially disliked the long passages about communal drinking in the pub, (well they seemed long). I discarded this book for weeks at a time in frustration and only finished it through will power. Though the end is one of the jaw droppingly brilliant bits.

I wanted to like this but I did not!
Spoiler If you beat your kid half to death, your kid will be better anywhere else! Especially if they're not technically your kid! Way too lenient on child abuse; I get that this was a different time, but the kid nearly dies! Acknowledging he needs an actual safe place cannot be that new of a discovery.

DNF halfway through

I really tried to enjoy this book but I just couldn’t get into it. I was at least a hundred pages in and I still wasn’t sure what was happening so I decided to scrap my reading, which is quite a shame because I was looking forward to the aroace rep. As well I loved the poetic nature of the writing style.
