I "borrowed" this from a hostel in Wellington two years ago and haven't got around to reading it until now.
I enjoyed the language and style very much, and it deals a lot with questions of who we are when we seem to lose what we find be to be our defining feature, be it titles like "family father" or "artist" or even "maoritanga". But the rating plummets for the simple reason that I had issues with much of the rest of the plot - SO MUCH CHILD ABUSE. Ugh. No.

uhh idk about this one. interesting writing style that was engaging but, at the same time, hard to follow. points for uniqueness but simultaneously a bit tryhard. plot built well but lost me around 60% into it and never got me back

Really loved this. Inventive language, use of different povs and tenses that works because of such clear characterization (admittedly it's made easier by the main characters being a woman, a man, and a child, but still). Such a rich world, examination of the internal and cool bits of Maori culture. A study of the grey areas.

Looooved it!

Agonizingly heart wrenching, the story was unlike anything else. However, beware! To enjoy Bone People, you need to stay open mined, be impervious to the substantial amounts of booze, abuse and tobacco which are always mixed up with love in order and forget all the rigid grammar rules.
