I finished the book a week or so back, and it was very good. The writing was wonderful and I loved the three characters. It was telling that I cared about what happened to them even when their behaviour was loathsome. I also enjoyed the Maori culture interwoven through the story.

I wish I liked this book more, but I just couldn't get into it. There's some intense child abuse in this book, which makes it hard to read. Be forewarned. The insight into Maori culture was beautiful, though.

This book...the writing is very good, as others have said; lyrical, engaging, unconventional. But this book has brutal images of child abuse and is apologist about it. For that reason, I found it difficult to read at times. I wish I had known that this was a topic of the book prior to reading it.
LOVED THIS BOOK! I couldn't put it down. I found a couple parts hard to follow but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story
What a book! I struggled but loved it all at the same time. There were times my heart felt so heavy I didn't want to carry on. There were times my heart felt so light I cried with happiness. An emotional rollercoaster of a book.
I remembered reading this book when I saw it mentioned in the review of another title. I read it over ten years ago so I don't recall the story vividly but I do remember a general feeling of wow, this story was pretty powerful and stuck with me for some time.
I had to go get drunk after reading this. A long, poetic, slightly-heavy-but-not-quite read that broke my heart, one way or another
