The story is a series of vignettes that were fairly breezy to read. Enjoyed the setting and characterization a lot, even if the plot didn't reinvent the wheel. Not the best from Colson Whitehead, but you could certainly do worse.

I found the main character uninteresting and passive. Even though there were high-stakes conflicts and broader social issues at stake, I somehow didn’t feel the weight or suspense the way I would’ve liked.

I really wanted to like this novel because I loved his previous works. It was just okay, some interesting moments.
