I could not finish this book. My mental state right now is not conducive to the type of dread this book emanates.
Jude, a death metal musician whose wife left him because he is a deeply damaged m... a... person. She did the right thing, I know how hard it is sometimes to make this effort and leave instead of pretending that you have hope and not at all just too tired to make the move. After his wife left, Jude went through a number of very young fans, one of whom killed herself, and now he and the only two people he has a semblance of a relationship with are being haunted by the dead woman's equally dead stepfather.
I was ready for Jude to be dead by page 12. He's just this kind of a guy. A guy, who doesn't like subservience. In a man. But that's not the reason I couldn't finish the book. I managed almost a half, but the constant dread and just general unpleasantness of absolutely everything in the book were depressing me. There are a lot of things to get depressed about these days, and I just had to bolt and find something more life-affirming to read. Maybe I'll come back to it when everything is peachy and sunshine and birds are singing and I need a bit of despair in my life.

This book admittedly scared me more than it should as I read it, but the ending was kind of a let down after he steadily increased the tension as the story proceeded. Overall I like Joe Hill, and I'll probably read more of his books, but he seems to still be developing his writing.

Well written book, but I went into it knowing nothing about the book at all.
It is scary and filled to the brim with child abuse. Not sure why so many of the books I have read of late have child abuse in them, but I am way past the point of having my fill. Ick!
Also I really didn't believe the "killer's" motivation.

My first Joe Hill read, and I enjoyed this quite a bit. I'll definitely be reading more from him!

A decent first effort, albeit a little predictable in the reveal. I should get around to reading 20th Century Ghosts at some point, now that I've read all of his novels so far.
This book grabbed ahold of me and wouldn’t let go. I finished it in one day.
