I DNF’d this book pretty quickly. I really wanted to like this and get into it but something about it just wasn’t working for me and I can’t put my finger on what it was. This doesn’t mean the author is a bad writer, she’s absolutely a good writer. But I didn’t like what I read of this particular story.

The story starts out with Sunnëva hunting in a frozen wasteland to try and put something in her belly. The whole area has been frozen since The Ice Phoenix settled there. But the world around him is slowly dying and the people there are struggling to get by. Especially when half their bounty must go to their king.

Her father returns from a raid and we find out that he’s an abusive asshole (shocker) and her brother is sick. Her father won’t save him so Sunnëva must. But the key to his survival comes from a rare blue rose that is only found in the King’s gardens. Once she has that she returns home only for the king to follow her and her brother to die anyway.

I stopped after that. It was around 12% of the way and I disliked her brother dying and her trying to fight the ice king. I don’t think I’ll be picking it back up based off of the other reviews either. This is just my personal opinion and I would try the author again depending on the book. I just didn’t like this story.

I loved this book! I caught myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it and had to resist the urge to read it while at work. Probably my favorite beauty and the beast retelling! I never found myself getting bored with it or wanting to take a break.

This is such a good prequel for Guardians of the Maiden. There's so many easter eggs of things also in the Divine Blood series that I caught myself saying oh my gosh to. The spice was so good as was the relationship between Sunneva and Jokull. I feel like this book made me feel every emotion: sad, happy, angry (for the characters).

The character development is top notch. Sunneva is such a bada** and I loved her character. Jokull was so protective and just made me melt on the inside. He was also supportive of Sunneva and wanted her to be the best version of herself. He encouraged her to be the queen she was and not to bow to anyone. Basically their characters were 10/10!

Highly, highly recommend this book to fantasy and Beck Michaels' fans!
P.S. Do check trigger warnings before reading!

This book really took me by a surprise. It honestly had everything, from great writing to an amazing plot and side characters and main characters. I honestly can't think of a single thing that I would have wanted changed with any aspect of the story. From beginning to end it was thoroughly enjoyable and I will definitely be rereading it and seeing what else this author has out. For the main characters I love how they were fated mates but you didn't figure that out until close to the end when they had really gone through their trials and tribulations and individual growth as well as growth together as a couple from hate to love before that really figured it out. The author didn't use that as a scapegoat in any way when writing their story. I also love how their love was essential theme to the story but it didn't overpower anything else going on it was interwoven perfectly into all the other issues that were taking place. I also loved that there was amazing world building and the author really gave all the necessary information but never did I feel overwhelmed by all the information or the places of the names it was extremely well done. Another aspect that was amazing was the sexual tension between the two main characters, the build-up was perfect and the actual spicy scenes when it came was

I LOVE THIS BOOK! The story is so rich and interesting in a world that really pulls you in! Jokull and Sunneva are so complex and enjoyable to read about!
