It took me a long time to really get into this book, but it got my attention the more I read on. At its core, this is a very interesting story, but I felt like some of the cliches kept distracting me. This would probably be great to recommend for middle schoolers who want to learn about Central American immigration.
Amazing, but heartbreaking, read. I just wanted to wrap my arms around these characters. It’s so important for us as Americans to be able to empathize with those who don’t live in such privileged countries. I hope many children, and adults, read this book and at least take pause when they think about immigration issues.

Just as gripping the second time around.

A harrowing journey undertaken by two teenagers from Guatemala to the US. This book was unsparing in the details of traveling through Mexico and across the border. I appreciated it for that perspective and also for giving me a better of understanding of what it means to need to escape gangs that have taken over villages. Recommended.

3.5. Took me awhile to get into this and really care for the characters. Picked up in the second half.
Remarkable and important book that I couldn’t put down. I’m glad to see that there’s a sequel. It’s not an emotionally easy read, but it is worth it.
Excellent and timely read about what it's like fleeing violence and crossing into the U.S. This story is about cousins escaping from gangs in Guatemala to be reunited with their older brother in New Mexico. Everyone should read, especially those who can't empathize with immigration.
A poignant story tackling difficult issues that’s accessible to younger adolescents while engaging older readers.
