Loved this book. I've read a couple of nonfiction titles on this same topic (Enrique's Journey) and this book seems very accurate although with a happier ending than many of the true stories. And for that I'm grateful. Highly recommend!

A 2018-2019 Missouri Truman Readers Award preliminary nominee (grades 6-8).

Twelve-year-old Jaime and his teenage cousin Angela are forced to flee their small village in Guatemala after a family member is killed for refusing to join the local drug gang. They are trying to reach Jaime's brother in the United States, but the trip is long and very dangerous.

This was a powerful story with plenty of action. It humanizes something we mostly only see on the news in our area.

this was a very enlightening read, i would say. even though it’s a middle grade (?) novel, i felt like i really learned a lot about what people face as they immigrate to the united states. obviously this just skimmed the surface, but it was very interesting to read about.

the characters felt real and relatable, despite us being from completely different backgrounds. something that was also portrayed in this book was the lack of options the characters had. like, jaime and ángela had literally no choice but to flee guatemala or they would be killed. a lot of the time i think people say like “oh why couldn’t they just do it the legal way” but this really showed how that’s often not an option. i don’t know. anyway.

good. 10/10.
