This was once again thoroughly enjoyable and had a compelling ending. However, it felt a little formulaic, and the pacing and plot direction was really off. As a side note, I ADORE Jupiter and Morrigan’s adopted father/daughter relationship vibe.
Moderate: Murder, Bullying, Death, Fire/Fire injury, and Violence
Minor: Slavery, Alcohol, Animal cruelty, Excrement, Genocide, Gore, Grief, Infidelity, Injury/Injury detail, Medical content, Blood, Vomit, and Ableism
Minor warnings for self injury, capital punishment, blackmail, insects, imprisonment. Moderate warnings for mass death, family estrangement, drowning, loss of a loved one. Major warnings for epidemic and bigotry.cassie_ellie's review against another edition

Oof, I love this series but this one is ROUGH. This is 2020 in book form and that's not something I nor any kid who lived through it really needs to relive. This book is about genocide and deeply rooted bigotry. It's about literally stripping the personhood from a group those in power do not like. It's incredibly dark for a kid's book, which in itself isn't a bad thing, but it is a massive undertaking to try to explain all the bad things currently going on in the world around that kid. I could see it helping some process it while overwhelming others.
Personally, I think that's too much to put in the third book of a series. It feels like this book is already dated and will make rereading the entire series much harder. I started this series because I wanted some escapism, but this book made me confront all the trauma of last year and it was genuinely hard to get through. I'm not saying children's books shouldn't deal with heavy topics because they certainly should, I just don't think this specific book nailed it in the greater context. Still can't wait for the next one though!
