This was not very good imo. The writing was juvenile, but at first I wasn’t bothered by that because I thought the plot was interesting. However the more I read the more things annoyed me.
First it was some minor things, like how the author made several references to the MCs race (she was 1/8th black), which I thought was odd, until I realized she was using as a way to form a relationship with another woman she was in jail with, who was black, and then I thought it was odd AND lazy. I was also bothered by how the author talked about phones and emojis like she’s never met a person under 30 before. The reference to using a “black bar censor app” when anyone in 2018 would have just used Snapchat or a general photo editor app was strange and took me out of the book. In the end I was very disappointed by the whole “serial killer gene” thing and again felt like that was lazy. This book was also oddly paced. I feel like it spent a disproportionate amount of time in jail and not enough on what was currently happening.
I also thought that something would finally be revealed when we get to the part where they’re burying Angela, and there kind of was (Georgina being the one to suggest cutting her up) but then nothing happened as a consequence of that. There were also a few missing pieces I think, such as why Cat and her death were relevant, and why Calvin wrote “you’re welcome” on that note, and also why the fuck does Kaiser just forgive her and get into a relationship with her.
Despite my complaints, it really wasn’t all bad. This book did keep me interested throughout, and even though I was disappointed at the end, that’s more than I can say for some books.
