I was anxiously waiting for this book to be released and I’m sad to say that I found it less than average. Lots of repetition of themes that really weren’t profound or new. All the interesting bits were over explained, and all the uninteresting bits took up too much narrative space. I began this novel excited to take in the story, ended up wishing I could’ve just eaten it so I’d be done & could move onto better things.

This was not what I was expecting at all. I think the book is classified in GR as "Fantasy" but, I think it's really more sci-fiction. That's probably what threw me off. There are a lot of over arching themes related to children's fantasy. There are obvious fairy tale tropes (princess, knights, dragons...etc.) all of which come into contact with a sci-fi story. And then very strong feminist themes. It's just different. She left room for a follow up and oddly, I would consider reading because I invested in this book already. I really don't get stumped, but this one did it.

The beginning was very strong, and pacing felt right. The ending seemed rushed. Many loose ends left unfinished at the end.
