True. And this was a good historical romance. Great, even. The post Civil War New Orleans setting was interesting, and the examples of prejudice, racism and violence made everything feel brutally real. As a contrast, the love story between Valinda and Drake was very sweet. Val was a determined, passionate and a rebel, and Drake was kind, attentive and a pirate at heart, and I liked the two of them together. All in all, this book was wonderful. I expected more tension or conflict through the whole story, or that it would take Val and Drake more effort to resolve everything. Also, the writing style didn't always work for me. That said, I’m glad that I read this book and excited to read more of Jenkins’ works.

- I love how Beverly Jenkins' books are so rich in historical detail, really rooting the reader in the places in the novels.
- Valinda and Drake are a wonderful, fiery pair who make for a great, slow burning love story built not just from attraction but respect for each other.
