Great mystery set on Ireland that was easy to understand and connect with.
Typically mystery the books in Irish are steeped in detail or history that makes the plot hard to understand. This was much more a small town mystery that could have been almost anywhere, but still portrayed the beauty of the countryside and the hard life some live.
I'm excited for the next book.

For book club, reading outside my genre once again. I'll preface this review by saying I don't read mysteries and thrillers. 4 for the writing, 3 for the plot. At many points, I hoped this book might be going...somewhere... and I'd learn more about addiction/drugs in Ireland, evolving ideas about gender expression, Irish views of policing vs. American OR that I'd be caught up in a super-exciting edge-of-my-seat mystery. Who's killing the sheep? Who killed Brendan? For a while, it looks like we are going on an exciting ride to find out AND learn more about present-day Ireland. And then everything just kind of dies. I felt as if there were any statements Tana French was trying to make I could think about how I felt about them. But she doesn't. It was just like "the end." However, she writes beautifully and if you're longing for a trip to rural Ireland, this book will take you there.

107 pages in and very little happening in the way of plot. Also, hated how the dialogue of the MC (an American) was written. Corny. Just wasn’t compelled to read any further.

See my review for The Hunter. Basically, why Chicago PD in Ireland? Why gun-obsessed? Why everyone stupid and/or nefarious? Why not apply prodigious skills to nature writing (or something) rather than crime?

Overall enjoyed it, but I wanted to like it more than I did. It was sort of like a “man writing woman” cliche in reverse with a rather specific Chicago cop trope.
