This was such an exhilarating ride. By far my favorite book yet. Non-stop action. Anita Blake, The Executioner, lives up to her name. I love the world building. The book picks up where the last left off and Laurell K. Hamilton just builds layers on the already developed world. I believe you could read this as a stand alone, but you would be missing so much history and character development. And I am still riding Jean-Claude's fan wagon. How could I not??

STOP TALKING ABOUT NIKES. I sincerely do not give a remote crap about footwear brand selection. Please and thank you.

This series is very weird. I keep being told that it gets super dark - it's already dark and twisty. I'm terrified how much darker it would have to get to scare away my friends.

Oh Laurell

I wish that I had written a review of these books when I first read them in middle school. “Can” the judgement. I’m sure I would have praised it endlessly then. I can’t do the same now.
Reading the afterword, however, gives me hope that this book is where Laurell realizes that a million year old creature shouldn’t be downed in a single swoop. While she excels at continuing to introduce us to mystical creatures of lore, she still falls short at making them scary. I’m not sure what’s worse, really. Anita’s permanence or these creature’s vulnerability at her hands. One might argue that they underestimate her, but that’s the opposite of all their lines in the book. Everyone is hyper aware of Anita’s strength, but somehow stupid enough to keep her within a 1 cm radius.
The plot wasn’t terrible. I liked that she introduced a character who echoed Anita’s sentiments. I hadn’t thought it back when I first read the book, but what happens when the vampires kill all the humans? It would be easy for them to be majority. What will they eat then? Are we looking at human farms? Scary.
I don’t remember vividly reading the final battle. Granted, it spanned maybe 10 pages but it was great nonetheless. Short…whimsical…and diminutive but great.

I don’t know. If the oldest vampire alive couldn’t hold their breath next to Anita then nothing can. Right, Mommy Dearest? O.o
