i really liked it and debated whether or not to give it 4 or 5 stars… but it’s still probably unmatched from my 5 stars. its a very addictive read and i can’t wait to read the next one. sometimes i just feel like fantasy books have to be a bit longer but idk i still feel like it was a good length so im kinda just waffling

I wanted to like this book, in fact I did for about the first half of it. After making it to about 200 pages I just got bored. I did push through and finish the book, but I did skim a few chapters that truly just dragged on.
It just was so predictable. The direction the character development was going, the outcome of the villains, even the ending was just too predictable and took away the element of surprise and guessing to how it was going to end. I had expecting this big ending with how everything was built up and for it to be so anti-climatic kind of was a let down. Especially for how powerful these characters are built up to be.
The characters were both a hit and a miss too. I really liked Kell and Rhy especially the banter between them, but Lila was just hard to like. A lot of her dialogue is very corny, cliché, female mc dialogue and doesn't hit the mark a lot of the time. Especially towards the end she starts having these weird corny hero one-liners that just seem out of place. When it came to Lila and Kell, I liked them together as a team, but the book heavily pushes romance onto them and its so out of place and not felt the whole book except for one or two moments. They literally kiss after knowing each other less than 24 hours for "good luck" and then go back to having zero romantic chemistry until the last few chapters.
The pacing was not my favorite. It would go pretty fast and then slow way down and be hard to read. This story also is kind of a self contained story. While you can continue with books 2 and 3 to get more of the characters, you don't necessarily have to to finish the trilogy. Maybe someday I'll finish the trilogy myself, but for now I will probably just leave it at book 1.
