This second reading, almost 10 years after the first, was wonderful. I'd forgotten how much spark there is in this story. While I love Bronte's contemporaries, Charlotte's tale has so much more verve, urgency, and life than many other books of its kind. I came to love and respect Jane and her ability to grow while maintaining her essence. She's more than an equal for Rochester, which is saying something. There's so much here. I can't wait to read it again after another break; I'm sure Jane Eyre will reveal yet another layer then.

after two years, three restarts and month long breaks before actually committing to read the book, i finally, FINALLY finished it. this book was the first ever classic that i read on my own terms (aka not for a class) and i enjoyed the book a lot. brontë was definitely ahead of her time for creating a female character that has agency, passion, and depth. i really love books/plots that involve morality and explore the moral and philosophical constraints of religion, and i felt that those themes were thoroughly explored in a way that was satisfying and digestible. i cant wait to keep reading classics!
