As I was reading this book I was ready to immediately make it a 6 star book. I was in love with it. The pacing, the writing, the storytelling, and the characters were all perfect. I just fell in love with all of it. Until the end. I really was not a fan when Jane went to Moor House and when she went back to Rochester. I understand that was her happy ending, but I just did not agree with that choice. After I finished the book I thought it was probably not a 6 star because of the ending, but over the past few days I keep thinking about this book. I keep wishing that I was still reading it. I find myself obsessing over it in the same way I obsess over The Great Gatsby (which is my favorite book of all time). So even though there are parts I wasn’t in love with, I have come to appreciate them. Those parts gave the development of the character and I have come to an understanding of the time period the book written in. If this book was written now it absolutely would have had the ending I was expecting. So in conclusion, this is one of my new 6 star books and one of my top 5 favorite books of all time.

I had been wanting to read Jane Eyre for several years but other books on my to-read list were always more pressing because of deadlines for book clubs or other excuses. I just joined a new book club and the host this month chose Jane Eyre. I was excited to finally get the time to check this one off my list. And then I saw how long it was. I was put off a little by it since I’m part of more than one book club but I started listening to it on audio and increased to 1.5x speed. Some of the other book club members mentioned they were having a hard time with the book because they just wished Jane as a narrator would get to the point. I do think my listening at 1.5x speed helped with that some but part of me also enjoyed the book for the time period. Starting it the end of December and finishing early January helped me to feel a certain coziness while listening. What’s better than a cozy book around the holidays if you have time for it, right? I’m glad I can finally add it to my “read” list. It feels different than modern books for sure, but I appreciate that.

Aside from several annoying plot developments and characters, I liked it a lot. It was filled with rich descriptions of the scenery and allowed for a lot of character development for most of its cast as the novel went on.
