I'm so happy I picked up this audio book, if I had to have sit and read this book I don't think I would have made it through.
The description and detail are overwhelming yet beautiful. To hear them described to me in a lyrical way that isn't spoken anymore was wonderful, yet I know if I had read these words they would have been skimmed over and lost to me, I know my own attention span!
This is not a love story, it is more an autobiography told in story fashion with a love story at it's center. It's important to remember that Jane was never looking for love, she accepted her lot in life as someone who has no-one and is just looking for her little place in life. Once she finds love and has it ripped away from her, she must again learn to live for herself and stay true to her beliefs and virtues.
I've never seen or read any other adaptation of this story so I was able to experience this with no idea of the end.
While it took me a little longer to appreciate it and get through the story, I must say I did love it. I will be adding other classics to my list of want to read and hope I can enjoy them at least half as much.

**Warning: this text may contain spoilers** Ok - I confess now - this is my Desert Island book of all time. I've read it over 10 times now. I read it at about 12, fell in love with Mr Rochester, did it for O level (yip I'm that old) and loved Jane's independent spirit. Every time I read it I get something different and the older I get the more I see in it. I still think Jane is a sound heroine with principles (yes many based on Christianity)but even that has subtleties - like rejecting St. John (very high morals) for the passion and flaws of Mr Rochester. As I've got older Bertha has become more and more important to me as a character too (also influenced by The Wide Sargasso Sea). I do now get irritated with Rochester's attempt at making Jane jealous and find it very hard to forgive his manipulative ways but Jane finds her way. The reunion at the end always melts my heart. Most of all though I love Jane's spirit - from childhood to adulthood she makes her own decisions and I always feel she is a strong and independent heroine - would love to have met Charlotte Bronte to see how autobiographical it really is (her love affair, her family relationships and sibling deaths).

I'm discovering a couple things about myself lately.
1. There is a special place in my heart for classics. And,
2. I really am a sucker for romance.
This easily has become a new favorite.

Five men project their personal failings onto a people-pleasing teenager, to their inevitable disappointment. The thing I liked most was that every single living person of wealth or importance is a self-absorbed asshole and all the dependents are more or less good people. I personally did not enjoy the book, mostly because of its length, but I am impressed by the author.
This honestly wasn't that bad of a novel. While some parts were thoroughly boring, other parts really intrigued me. Jane got on my nerves at some points, but I ultimately liked her as a character. I would definitely recommend this book to someone who is looking for a good book, and since it's a classic I was surprised I never had to read it before. It reminded me of Huckleberry Finn in a way because throughout the book we watched Jane grow into the woman she was when the novel ended. Glad she turned out rich and had a loving family in the end.
