A book that is too much for itself. Decent story but way too long and extremely unbelievable. I’m too believe these four men from vastly different backgrounds all came together and happened to be this successful in their lives? I just struggled with believing plot points and understanding the relationships and how they wove together. Not a terrible book but left me feeling empty at the end.

This is one of the most devastatingly beautiful books I've ever read.
It made me feel emotions I didn't even know I could feel.
I didn't want it to end and I never want to read it again.

Okay, the entire time I was reading this book I was thinking, yeah it's sad but it's not as heartbreaking as people made it out to be.
When I tell you the last 3 pages are sad. I MEAN SAD.
Gonna go have an existential crisis now bye

So basically...

I read about a person who was so severely abused, neglected and traumatised that it then affected the rest of their life, with every one of their loved ones' attempts at helping being as futile as the next, leading to a whole swamp of negative experiences, depressing unhealthy coping mechanisms, self-harm, negativity, the only person they were ever able to love and trust dying in a car accident and then finally ending in them deciding to take their own life...

And I did this in my free time?

Heavy, heavy stuff. Yanagihara is able to write about some of the worst things that can happen to a person in a way that doesn't glorify or romanticize it in the least. Tackling the psychological impacts of experiencing this level of trauma is a feat. I am in awe of her work. That being said, you have to be in the right head space to read this book. I'm not sure that I was.
