It’s hard to formulate thoughts on this one right now. An important read. 

Sharing a massive trigger warning for the last chapter, which examines the church’s failure to prevent, respond to, and protect sexual victimization of children and women in the church. Even working extensively (8+ years, heavily focused on trauma and primarily on childhood sexual abuse) with this subject, this chapter was triggering and overwhelming to me. And one point I had to just put it away for a while. Take good care, especially if you have sexual trauma with or without religious trauma.

I can’t even begin to express how much I want everyone I know to read this book. It maps out with care, critique, and precision the rise of the religious right over time and where the cultural met the religious aspects of evangelism to bring us to the state of fear and anger which has stoked bubbling hatred and concealed abuse. I think this book is extremely important for those in politics or involved in civic engagement in any way to read as well as those who practice religion in a way which goes against the harmful ideals detailed in this book. It is not a guidebook to the other side of the harm which has been created but to better understand this movement is to know how to deconstruct it and I feel more informed having read this book.

buckle up for this one- it’s a TOUGH read. multiple instances of wanting to throw the book across the room or scream. very very important research and information- especially in light of our current political environment. 10/10 would recommend. incredible book.
