I listened to the audio while following along in ebook ...

I truly enjoyed this story of culture, language and traditions! It took me back to when I was surrounded by my family, including the not so happy moments.

I loved how the author brought light to family dynamics and the challenges you face when dealing with family who are stuck in their ways and everything gets handled how they were always handled.

I related to Lulu in so many ways ... especially having to deal with learning how to make decisions on your own based on the tools that you have.

I truly enjoyed the author's way of detailing the timeline the way she did, because it was so informative on the how the happenings from years ago impacted the present and how it played into the decision making of some of the characters.

I did not see a twist happening, and was so blindsided by it ... but after thinking about it, it made total sense in how the author brought it to light.

Some of the subjects may be triggering for some, so please tread carefully.

Overall Take:
Beautifully written historical fiction

Star Rating:
4.5 Stars

Synopsis:

In 1951 Pilar is confronted by a mysterious old woman who is sure Pilar stole her husband, and in a heated cry, curses her.

Now over 40 years later, Lulu is struggling alone. She struggles with her father, his moods, his outbursts and his secret life. When her grandma, her only lifeline passes away, she feels even more alone. So, when she meets a glamourous stranger, Lulu isn’t sure what to think. The stranger has a secret, but Lulu does too.

Thoughts:
I’ve been on a mini hiatus from historical fiction because I just got burned out. It got so depressing, that I just couldn’t handle any more for a bit. But when I came across this story about generational curses set on the Texas, Mexico border I knew I needed to read it, and for me it was going to be on audio. This was told from two perspectives, with two narrators, and they both did a fantastic job. Sometimes when the narrators are portraying two female characters, and they themselves are female, I often find myself only hearing one voice. However, that was not the case here, it was well done. The story was quite immersive. I found myself drawn to Lulu so much. I felt so much for her while she was going through such a hard time of her life, being a teenager, dealing with her moody dad, and just trying to survive. For a lot of the book, I wasn’t really sure how the two families intersected. Looking back, there were some clues, but not what I expected.

This book was beautifully written and so well done. The narration was beautiful, and the narrators really brought the characters to life well. The character depth was there and on point.

This book was done so well, and I really enjoyed listening to it.

Loved this portrayal of a badass young girl (14 going on 15) in the 90s in Texas, near the border, who is full of fighting spirit and love.

Plus multigenerational stories!
Music deep dives!
Selena Forever!
Friendship!

The story moves between the 50s and 90s, and each feels like its own time capsule. I was completely transported. The POV changes were well done too. The voice changes such that if you were just dropped into a chapter without being told who the narrator is, you would be able to figure it out.

All characters are fleshed out and flawed in believable ways, and they are treated tenderly and with respect. (Even as Dad is getting dragged for his mistakes!)

Easy to read with some stunning writing and moments that kind of pop up and punch you. I would love to reread this sometime just to appreciate the writing itself more.
