This book is a love letter to Tex-Mex life. It follows the story of an angsty teenaged girl in the 90s which took me back to the past. It made me feel like I was sitting at my breakfast bar with a friend reliving my teen years. The nostalgia is real!
The angsty teen story might not be for everyone but I love how it highlights the beautiful parts of Mexican American culture (cultural identity, comadres, tejano music, charros, vaqueros, and tradition) while also highlighting the off putting parts too (machismo, generational trauma, purity culture, classism).

ohhhhhhhhhhh i loved it but poor pilar poor romi poor yoli, and poor lucha but if a single adult would have talked to her like a fucking human being instead of treating her like an infant none of this needed to happen. i’m glad she saw selena though and i’m glad pili got to know her. also fascinating bits of history woven in that i really enjoyed!
