Puro Tejas. Nostalgic and relatable with a dash of magical realism. The blurred lines of relationships felt messy in a real way. A true triumph that made me feel right there at the border with the characters ready to throw gritos.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Selena and the musical references in this book. The dual narrative was tough for me because I found Pilar much more interesting than Lulu. Reading from Lulu’s perspective of angsty teenager was too much for me. I just didn’t look forward to Lulu’s chapters.

I personally did not like Lulu in the beginning but then she grew on me, I started to emphasize with her. I was deeply engrossed in Pilar’s story. The author does an amazing job writing realistic characters. I loved seeing all the connections entwine the past and present. The air of mystery was compelling and the curse was a deeply complex component in this family saga. I enjoyed the immersion of Mexican and Tejano culture. There were many references to Mexican music and other genres it was fun to play the song as a I read along. One of the final chapters was truly iconic I felt like I was there! There was a lot to ponder when I finished the book.
