Scarlett O'Hara (Gone With the Wind) vs Bathsheba (a comparison):

These two young hell-raisers (I could not bear the term of heroine, because they neither deserve nor display this endearment) continually express a discontent of their circumstances, entangle themselves with men who claim no gentlemanly charms (Rhett Butler and Sargent Troy), and then manage to somehow both end their stories with a depressing rejection of zeal for life.

Took me a while but got there in the end. 3.5 stars - found the characters really frustrating and had to re-read some of the pages due to old English. Definitely preferred the second half.
