Harry Bosch never disappoints. Well, except for that one where he went to China. That one was disappointing. But "The Black Box" was up to usual standards. Connelly keeps a nice pace in his story telling, good level of suspense, clean writing. Perfect reading for this post-Christmas week.

Started out slow and rocky for me. Picked up after Bosch started down the right path, but until then it felt silted and formulaic. Did like getting to see more of Maddie. The last two books in the series have been the worst so far. Hopefully the action picks back up in the next book.

This had moments of being a great read. But they are not the "older" Harry books with Harry's angst. He's gotten way too tame for my liking. The idea of the book was a good one, the execution of it wasn't as interesting. Sometimes a character just needs to be retired. Perhaps Harry should be that guy.

Detective Harry Bosch investigates another cold case. A twenty year old murder of a foreign reporter during the 1992 Los Angels Rodney King riots. The reporter, Anneka Jespersen, survived reporting on war zones in Kuwait and Iraq and other places. But she was shot dead in Los Angeles. Bosch tracks down the murder weapon in 2012 and this opens clues to a number of other murders. Will he find who killed Jesperson? He's Harry Bosch!

What a relief to immerse myself in some good ol' Harry Bosch, a character I like more each time I read another book. This one was fun. Lots of good scenes with Bosch and his daughter.

Another outstanding Harry Bosch novel. I've read almost all of this series and unlike so many others, the Bosch books are consistently good, innovative and engaging.
Harry is still working cold cases, and The Black Box plot involves a murder that occurred during the LA Riots. Department politics still play a part in the action but less time is devoted to IA hearings and political maneuverings and more time to detective work--a balance that I found just right.

Although Connelly's books are often a little grim for my sensibilities--the man can spin a plot! That alone keeps me coming back to his shelf. I always find these books engaging, and this one was no exception. Love the continuing development of Harry Bosch's character and the complex plot threads that weave through the book.

All of the Bosch novels have been very good - until this one. Perhaps Michael Connelly's usual ability to grab my attention and keep it from the first page to the end spoiled me. I didn't become fully engaged until 100 pages in. Enjoyable reading, just not IMHO up to Connelly's usual standard.
