This book seemed to suck you in right off the bat but it me it slowly keeled off and I had to somewhat push my way through until it picked up after half way through. I felt in this book, Connelly jumped between first and third person with Bosch and at times I felt he was going into too much detail or explanations on procedures. Probably my least favorite so far in the series.
Harry gets to work on a case from the week of the L.A. Riots in 1992 twenty years afterwards. The case involves a Danish reporter found murdered in an alley near the center of the riots. Because of the chaos, the case was never really given a lot of attention, but Harry picks it up and starts following the gun. Not a pleasant story, and I was ready to pooh-pooh it, but I actually found myself a little weepy at the end when Harry phones the victim's brother.
Another quick read with Michael Connelly and the Harry Bosch series. The storyline wasn't the greatest or super entertaining, but it was such a quick read that it didn't matter too much. Had a little suspense in it, however, I knew early on who the killers were.
Love all of his books, but this one kept me engaged more than others. I couldn't put it down.
These are all pretty similar, but easy reading entertainment. I like reading about cops investigating old cold cases which is exactly what this series is about
I’ve been working backwards in the Bosch series. I remember reading one or two or the very early ones a long time ago and not loving them, so when I started reading the most recent one and really enjoyed it, I was pleasantly surprised! And as I’ve worked backwards in the series, I’ve continued to enjoy them, but I didn’t love this one. I think what was missing for me is the partnership - this was the first one I’ve read where Harry’s partner didn’t play much of a role. Just Harry is too much darkness and brooding. Probably will be awhile before I continue working my way back through the series, although I’m eagerly awaiting his newest book!
Not finished yet - but really enjoying this Bosch novel. Much of it is familiar - but that is a good thing and why I keep returning to Michael Connelly and his work.
What I am enjoying this time is the insights into Bosch's relationship with his daughter and his slowly growing self-awareness of how his character is perceived by and impacts on others.
Only half way through, but enjoying the read and looking forward to the resolution.
Update: finished now and thoroughly enjoyable. There were a few Sherlock Holmes moments, where Bosch makes some deductions that seem very fortunate, but I guess he does have 25 years of cops gut instinct to draw on. Some things remain a little unexplained and I am guessing some of the new characters will return in future novels.
Highly recommended.

I am in awe of Michael Connelly. As always a tightly plotted, enthralling tale.
Harry may be getting older but there's still plenty of life left in him yet.
