Intense and not for the faint-hearted.

Although it took me a while to finish this book - because silly me got distracted by so many other things - I found it a well-written novel that holds up to the standard of the first one in this series and solidifies its place among the very best in the genre.

Listening to the audiobook was simply the cherry on the cake.

Second Charlie Parker story I read and this man is growing on me. He's kind of the antihero or the hero that doesn't want to be a hero but he is anyway for how he grew up.
This time he remains in the north but the story takes him towards the freezing north and a case that was there long before he was a grown up man.
Sometimes it's difficult to get your way with all the different characters Connolly gets in, but at the same time, if you go with the flow, you'll finally understand the ones that are important.

More descriptive and more action this time around. But thought the mystery of the first book was better.

Big thanks to author and friend [a:Christopher Farnsworth (Author)|5018307|Christopher Farnsworth (Author)|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] for recommending John Connolly a couple times. (Chris has also written a couple awesome books, very un-put-down-able and creepy and well-written: Blood Oath and The President's Vampire...check 'em out!)

Bird grew on me: I liked that he was not ostensibly a badass. No, that role was left to Angel/Louis, who I adored and spent half the book praying for. Great cast of characters, spare prose, a few very LOL moments, awesome, snappy, insightful dialogue.

Really really liked this and will happily suggest to other friends.

Solid, enjoyable mystery-thriller. I look forward to continuing this series.
