I was drawn to this book by the whimsical nature of its cover and its description that promised adventure to faraway lands. However, the air dirigible featured on the cover doesn't feature prominently and the adventures are more hardships than they are adventures. But, I think what really held this book back was the way it was narrated. It's clear that Esi Edugyan has a mastery over words, but her beautiful sentences lacked was emotion. I felt the beginning of the book was much stronger. I could see Big Kit in my mind and feel her steadfast spirit. I could feel Washington Black's suffering and his fear, and then his apprehension to trust Titch. I felt disgust at the horrors described and the cruelty of Master Erasmus. But then as the book goes on, the narration takes on a more disconnected feeling. Tragedies and injustices occur but the way they are described makes the reader feel that they are experiencing them from afar. It feels that these events which should have had a greater emotional toll on Washington pass too easily and the story moves on to focus on something else. Worse even is that it feels like the story drags on and on and there is much more telling the reader than showing the reader.
I appreciated that Washington and Titch's relationship was complicated and nuanced. Esi Edugyan touches on the "white savior" problematic nature of their bond and does a pretty good job of representing Washington's internal struggles with Titch. But the ending was beyond disappointing. I had to read it twice, because I was so confused. It didn't feel like enough was resolved to justify the fixation, and instead just made other narrative threads feel pointless. So overall, I felt a bit mislead by the book's imaginative cover and then disappointed by how the story shaped out.

Ο ιδιοκτήτης της φυτείας που του έδωσε με κάποια ειρωνεία το όνομα του απελευθερωτή των ΗΠΑ πεθαίνει και τον διαδέχεται νέος ιδιοκτήτης, εξαιρετικά σκληρός. Ο μικρός και η προστάτιδά του Big Kit περνάνε δύσκολες ώρες, σε σημείο να σκέφτονται μέχρι και την αυτοκτονία για να ξαναγεννηθούν στην πατρογονική τους χώρα ξανά σε νέα σώματα. Ωστόσο, ο ιδιοκτήτης κόβει τα κεφάλια των πτωμάτων των αυτόχειρων, ώστε η μετενσάρκωση να είναι αδύνατη. Ο μικρός Χουάσινγκτων και η Μπιγκ Κιτ τα βάφουν λίγο μαύρα. Με το δίκιο τους.

Παρά κάποιες αναποδιές (θα καταστραφεί το μισό του πρόσωπο σε μια έκρηξη, θα χρεωθεί την αυτοκτονία ενός λευκού φίλου των ιδιοκτητών της φυτείας, θα ναυαγήσει με αερόστατο στη θάλασσα), ο GWB θα τραβήξει το δρόμο του σιγά σιγά προς την ελευθερία και θα αναζητήσει τον έρωτα στο πρόσωπο μιας κοπέλας με την οποία μοιράζεται το ενδιαφέρον για τη ζωγραφική και τα πλάσματα της θάλασσας… (είμαστε ακόμα στα μισά και εγκαταλείπω την περίληψη, να κάτσετε να το διαβάσετε, κακομαθημένοι).
Το πρόβλημα με το βιβλίο είναι ότι μετά το πολύ καλό ξεκίνημα, κάπου χάνει την ορμή του και να αρχίζει να «απλώνει» και να αναλώνεται με ό,τι να ‘ναι. Οι ήρωες χάνουν το συμπαγή τους χαρακτήρα και γίνονται λιγότερο ενδιαφέροντες ή πιστευτοί, οι γραμμές της πλοκής πάνε από δω κι από κει, καραγκαγκάν φωσκόλειες αποκαλύψεις με τουίστ χαλάνε τη σούπα.
Ωστόσο, παραμένει συνολικά ευχάριστο στην ανάγνωση και δεν το μετανιώνεις. Η γραφή είναι καλή και σε κρατάει, ακόμη κι όταν τα «γεγονότα» γίνονται πιο αποσπασματικά και λιγότερο ενδιαφέροντα, ή ελαφρώς παρανοϊκά (π.χ. ένας κυνηγός σκλάβων που έγινε ασφαλιστικός πράκτορας για να καταλήξει κρεμασμένος).

I'm mildly indifferent lukewarm tap water to the book in terms of plot, which starts out strongly but starts to fizzle when we reach the arctic of all places and doesn't ever pick up all that much. Stuff happens, but it doesn't seem to click together with the same impact as it did when it was contained in one location. When we refocus on the plantation in later chapters is when the most emotion and drive comes back: the globetrotting marine biologist stuff just feels sliiiightly less compelling in comparison, although watching Wash come into his own is an absolute delight. I like Wash as a character, definitely. This scientifically minded, wonderful young man with a love for all the glittering octopi in his specially made viewing tanks, and his struggles with expectations of self and others on him.
I'm madly in love with the audiobook narrator. Dion Graham is bursting with talent and emotion and accents and power and subtlety and softness, to the point where, after an incredibly hard emotional scene toward the last half of the book, actually has to sniffle and catch his breath, and it's left on tape for us to hear. The raw power of this guy's voice is astronomical.
