While I think a few subjects already have so many books on them, including southern slavery, this book presents a fresh perspective. First it doesn't take place in the US, second, most of the story is about completely different themes- hot air balloon travel, the Canadian arctic, the first aquarium. These are stories we haven't heard. The writing was also great, depth to characters and pretty much everything was tied up nicely giving a rationale to each character that was introduced. I also loved that there were hints at current issues written into past issues. I didn't love the ending, but a worthy read.

A refreshingly beautiful story that gives us new glimpses into enslavement mingled with a coming of age story.

This is my second time reading this book. 1st was the audiobook. This time, I read the text in preparation for the Hulu miniseries.

I noticed things this time, how the author gave signs of the natures of individuals and their relationships, even when Wash was not yet able to understand. I think that I will read it again someday. There is beauty here that will reward repetition.

A beautifully written and thought-provoking novel, Washington Black follows an escaped slave’s journey across the world in search of freedom and identity. Wash’s evolution is compelling, and his complex relationship with Titch adds depth to the story.

The mix of history and fiction sometimes blurred the line between fact and imagination, which was slightly frustrating. And while the poetic ending had meaning, I wanted more clarity—Wash actively choosing his future would have made the book even stronger.

Overall, a fantastic read with a gripping story, but I would’ve rated it higher with a clearer resolution.
