Breathtaking. My favorite book of the past year.
I am in awe of Chan’s ability to write about the savage sadism of society, of human beings’ capacity for cruelty, of systems that control women under the guise of knowing “what’s best,” while also exploring the power of love between mothers and children, and between women enduring a common devastating experience. Beyond that, she’s so goddamn hilarious that I howled with laughter throughout the book at the brutal ironies and observations. How is this possible? It is quite an accomplishment.
The final stretch of the novel is so harrowing I found myself weeping and laughing at the same time as I walked down sixth ave listening to it. The audiobook is also one of the best I’ve heard in quite some time.
My sweet spot. Dark as it comes, insightful, funny as hell.

This book was absolutely heartbreaking. I wasn't expecting it to hit me so hard but I cried a ton whenever I picked it up.

Considering I've just had a baby and I'm feeling very overwhelmed, this probably wasn't the right time for me to read this book. It was a bit traumatising. That said, I'm glad I read it.

I found this book terrifying for so many reasons but mostly because I can see how easily something like this could happen. It was brutal and cruel and every chapter was more painful than the last.

This was an excellent read and I applaud Chan for evoking so many feelings.

This book was not what I expected at all. Think of some kinda SiFi, psychological, squid games wild ish. I mean, it literally is what the title says, but also, torture. Woah

Sheesh. A rough read. Dystopia heartbreakingly grounded in reality. Great, very compelling writing. Read it almost entirely in one sitting which is usually the highest praise I can give a book.
