I picked this novel because the premise reminded me of a YA favorite, Scythe by Neal Shusterman. Something I loved about this story was the different stewards of death in various nations and cultures existing in the same world. I would love to learn more about that part of this world in future books. Unfortunately, I had a similar experience with Keeper of Night as with Shadow and Bone — it was a little too young, trope-y, and predictable for me to really get into. I think teen me would have loved it, though!

This was so interesting but so dark. It definitely didn't feel YA to me. Props to the author for making me invested in the story even though the MC was unlikable (for understandable reasons). I wonder what's going to happen next...

I had my doubts about this story, but the writing is easy and interesting to fall into, and I found myself flying through chapters without even realizing it. The ending was a definitely a shock; there were a lot of bad vibes, but nothing I could imagine came close to what actually played out. I can't imagine what the sequel will be like, but I think I'm interested in picking it up later this year to see what is next for Ren.

The pace of the book is good and everything about the story was good until like the 95% mark. It’s not a bad book either, I just wouldn’t like to see where the story goes in the second one, because I low key hate the ending of this one. The character started out as a lost but semi-good person and got ruined on the process.

This was a really compelling read! I loved how creative it was, and the idea of Death personified. I thought the narrative/plot was really engaging! The thing keeping me from rating it 5 stars is just a personal trope that I tend to dislike, which is morally grey mcs. I know, I know... very unpopular opinion! But at times I found myself really frustrated by the main characters! I will say, I'm really excited to read the sequel because I enjoy the direction the story is going... and I really enjoy being in Ren's head and seeing her turmoil and following her on her journey. Am I happy with all the choices she made? No! But nobody's perfect, especially in books, so I think I can let that slide lol! Anyway, this was just a really cool and unique story that I quite enjoyed!
