I first fell in love with its Studio Ghibli animated counterpart, and I was delighted to find that the movie hadn't taken to many liberties! There were some taken, of course, but those taken really enhanced it for film, where the receiver tends to get less information.
I found it quite interesting that Howl came from our world - I had not been expecting parallel worlds at all. It was a nice twist, and I liked the characters. It was interesting how they were all connected in one way or another.
I just wish that Howl and Sophie had gotten a little more closure. I was able to pick up easily when Howl quite obviously showed he cared about Sophie, but it was a bit vague in how Sophie broke the curse and everything. I wish their relation hadn't been left quite so open-ended. Even if someone else had made a comment, it would've been better. Otherwise, I found the book quite satisfying.

Like many others, I've watched Miyazaki's film version ad nauseam. This original book is infatuatingly charming. The deeper development of Sophie and Howl is so compelling. It's a joy to listen to and to have further context and plot informing a beautiful film only makes it better.

it’s hard to love this if you love miyazaki’s take on it. the book doesn’t hold a candle to the magic and nuance of the film.
