As always, I loved Rushdie's writing. He has a great idea and goes with it, but by the nature of it it sort of becomes too overarching and feels kind of like a history? There's some fun to it, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it felt too sweeping and not granular enough for some of the characters to capture my full attention. Regardless, glad I read it and glad he's still writing.

I thought this was generally really well written and I enjoyed exploring this time and place, it felt very immersive in that respect. I do think I struggled to connect with the characters which hindered my enjoyment.

DNF at 40%. I hate this style of dispassionate objective narration. I need action and passion.
It's a long audiobook. I was into it for the first half, but it started to lose me at about the 65% mark. I can only take so much royal subterfuge.
Want to give 3.5 (goodreads, please get on that feature, thanks). I could tell what it wanted to be—an "epic"—but it never quite felt right to me. Toward the beginning, wasn't really compelling to pick back up. An interesting story, nonetheless.
