Magical realism rarely clicks for me, so I wasn't surprised to not love this book, but I definitely found it more engaging than some of Rushdie's earlier writing. An interesting look at the back and forth between progressive and regressive social policies.

Pampa Kampana, a girl determined not to see any more girls burned in flames like her mother, strikes a deal with a goddess that sees her breathing life into a great city that embraces and banishes her. An epic confronting the ambitions of men with power and Pampa's desire to change the fates of women, power is not always what it seems.

This book was good, told in a fable/ mythological manner, making me think of 1001 Nights and the Alchemist. It was a well-crafted tale, and I recommend giving it a read.

Beautiful and haunting reflection on Empire.
