The minute my library added The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, Vol. 1 to Libby… I downloaded it right away 🎧📚 At just the right length 🙌🏻 it was the perfect cozy listen. Told through Emma’s journals…we follow her life in a Victorian London neighborhood as she navigates family secrets…quirky neighbors and the everyday challenges of being a young woman with a sharp mind and independent spirit. Emma is such a clever girl…witty…observant and so much fun 💫

This feels like a gentle coming-of-age set against the charm of the era and I found myself smiling at Emma’s observations. I can’t wait to dive into the next journals and spend more time in her world 🕰️✨

My Question for Beth: If Emma were transported to today’s world…what modern hobby or pastime do you think she’d enjoy most?

A generous two stars. Quite honestly I found the entire book infuriating. I understand it's the set-up for the bigger story that is to follow, but really it just doesn't actually go anywhere? We've just been introduced to all the chatacters and the book's already over? Unfortunately there just wasn't enough body to this for me to be interested in the rest of the series.

Charming, delightful, a well-narrated audiobook. The main character's voice sings and the setting is historical with just a touch of oddity that might be magic.

I very much like Emma M. Lion and with she were a friend of mine. She is 20 years old and cynical enough to be more daring than most members of her gender of her era. She reminds me a lot of the song lyric "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose."

Arriving in London after 3 years of keeping her head (mostly) down and mouth (mostly) shut in the service of her (fully) detested aunt, she thinks her new life is just beginning, only to find everything pretty much dashed to pieces.

This particular set of journals introduces those who I believe will be the main players and the widely varying lives they lead. I hope the other volumes in the series keep up the fun this one hints will be starting.
